Dr. Cárdenas is a Staff Member and Consultant of the Institute of Digestive Diseases and Metabolism at Hospital Clinic and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. After qualifying from Medical School, he pursued his Residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University Medical Center followed by a Research Fellowship in Hepatology at Hospital Clinic and the University of Barcelona and a Clinical Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston. He also completed an Advanced Hepatology Fellowship as well as an Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship at BIDMC and HMS. Finally, he completed a Masters in Clinical Investigation at HMS and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston and his Doctoral Thesis (Ph.D.) at the University of Barcelona.

Dr. Cardenas is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His main expertise and research interests are cirrhosis and its complications, interventional procedures in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension and biliary complications in liver transplant recipients. He has over 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 80 chapters in medical textbooks and has authored a textbook on Complications of Cirrhosis. He has delivered numerous invited lectures around the globe on topics related to complications of cirrhosis and liver transplantation. He serves on the Editorial Board of several GI/Hepatology Journals including Liver Transplantation (Deputy Editor), Journal of Hepatology, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Digestive and Liver Disease and Frontline Gastroenterology, among others. He is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (FAASLD) serving on several committees of both societies and as Vice-Chair of the ACLF SIG of the AASLD. He is also an active member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (serving on its Education Committee), Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (serving on its Permanent Council), and the Massachusetts Medical Society.
