Nirmala Gonsalves MD

Dr. Gonsalves serves as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a member of Northwestern’s Esophageal Center. Her research career has been dedicated to improving the care of patients with the rare group of diseases, eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs). Her clinical experiences with EGIDs have shaped the overarching research goals that include identifying novel treatments and determining the best methods to measure disease activity. She has co-authored over fifty papers, authored nine textbook chapters, and presented over thirty invited grand rounds/symposium lectures on the topic of EGIDs at various national and international meetings. She is one of the founding member of the steering committee member of The International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers (TIGERS), a multidisciplinary research consortium developed to further the knowledge about EGIDs and improve the lives of patients with these diseases and a co-investigator for the NIH funded U54 Grant Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers (CEGIR, PI-Rothenberg) with the mission to develop greater understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders and improve the lives of our patients. She also serves as a steering committee member for the gastroenterology regulatory endpoints and advancement of therapeutics VI (Great VI) with the FDA. In her local research activities, she serves as the Co-director of Northwestern’s Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases Program and Director of the Northwestern Biorepository, one of the Cores of the NIH Program Project Grant (PI-Pandolfino) focused on disordered biomechanics in the esophagus.
