Bruce Bochner MD

Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Dr. Bruce Bochner completed his postdoctoral allergy and immunology training at Johns Hopkins in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology of the Department of Medicine, and joined the faculty in 1988. In 1999, he became Professor of Medicine, and from 2003-2013 served as its Division Director. In August 2013, he moved to Chicago to become the Samuel M. Feinberg Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. As a cellular immunologist, his primary research efforts have focused on human eosinophil, mast cell and basophil biology and function including their isolation, phenotype, adhesion, migration, activation, survival and death pathways. His primary clinical interests focused on eosinophil and mast cell-related diseases and their treatment. He is an author on over 300 manuscripts, book chapters and reviews with an H-index of 81. Among his research accomplishments is the co-discovery of Siglec-8 on eosinophils and mast cells, an ITIM-containing receptor uniquely expressed on these cells. When engaged, this receptor inhibits mast cell degranulation and promotes eosinophil death.
